When should turf be laid?

Autumn is usually a useful season for a new lawn. The RHS advises mid-autumn as the preferred time, with laying possible into early spring when the ground is not frozen or excessively wet. Hot, dry conditions increase the demands of establishment.

Watering, first mowing and using your lawn.

New turf needs moisture beneath the surface while it roots. Adjust watering to rainfall and ground conditions, following the handover guidance; a quick sprinkling that only wets the grass may leave the soil underneath dry.

Keep heavy use off the lawn while roots establish. Plan another route for trips to the shed and keep children and pets away during that stage. Start mowing with a high blade setting once the turf has rooted sufficiently.
