Plan an entrance that works for parking, walking to the house and everyday access. Landscape Gardener of Kent installs resin, block paving, tarmac and gravel driveways in Canterbury, with the layout, supporting construction, drainage and edges considered together.
Whether you want to replace an ageing surface or discuss a different parking layout, send photographs and approximate dimensions. We can assess the work and provide a free, no-obligation quotation.
Resin-bound surfacing gives a continuous aggregate finish. Confirm the specific system, base condition and drainage design. Resin-bound and resin-bonded surfaces are different constructions; the quotation should say which is proposed.
Block paving offers laying patterns and border choices, with individual units that can be lifted for investigation or repairs. Conventional block paving is not automatically a permeable system. Our Canterbury block paving page covers driveways, paths and patios together.
Tarmac can suit a straightforward parking area with defined edges. Discuss the supporting layers, junctions with retained surfaces and the intended vehicle use. An existing surface must be assessed before resurfacing is considered.
Gravel offers a loose-stone finish, but containment, movement, slopes and upkeep affect whether it suits your entrance. Gravel at the surface does not establish that the whole driveway drains adequately.
Check where vehicles will stand, how doors will open and whether there is a clear walking route to the house. Allow for bins, garage doors, gates and any turning movements. A wider entrance alone does not solve a parking layout that leaves these routes obstructed.
Agree the finished levels around the house, garage, access covers and adjoining paths. Existing walls and planting may influence what can be retained. If the driveway connects to new fencing, walls or a patio, share the whole brief so the sequence and junctions can be considered together.
The base needs to suit the ground and expected traffic. Before quoting, assess the existing construction, soft areas, levels and signs of movement. There is no single excavation depth suitable for every driveway.
Agree where rainwater will go. A designed permeable system depends on compatible layers and the site conditions; it is not just a choice of visible finish. An impermeable surface needs a suitable drainage arrangement. Ask for the proposed construction and water-management details in writing.
Access affects excavation, deliveries and waste removal. Show the entrance and any restrictions in your photographs, and discuss temporary parking while the work and any curing take place.
The total depends on area, existing ground, access, excavation, waste disposal and the selected construction. Drainage, borders, steps and adjustments to covers can add work beyond the surface itself. A price for resurfacing is not directly comparable with a full replacement.
Compare quotations that identify:
Gravel may have a lower initial surface cost than some alternatives, but ground preparation, containment and maintenance still matter. The cheapest suitable choice follows an assessment of your property and the complete installation, rather than a material-only price comparison.
For houses in England, front-garden paving generally avoids a planning application when it uses permeable surfacing or directs rainwater to a lawn or border to drain naturally. An impermeable area over 5m² without that provision needs planning permission. Restrictions and exceptions can apply, including to flats and some converted properties.
A new or altered vehicle crossing over the pavement is a separate matter for the highway authority. Confirm approval and contractor requirements before changing the access. Planning permission for paving does not itself authorise a dropped kerb.
That depends on its condition, levels and suitability for the proposed finish. Cracking, movement or drainage problems need investigation. Covering an unsuitable base can leave the original problem unresolved.
There is no reliable answer from the material name alone. Area, supporting construction, access, detailing and the specified products affect the installed price. Compare complete quotations for the surfaces you are considering.
Loose gravel may be worth comparing, particularly where its appearance and upkeep suit the entrance. Edging, slopes, movement and groundwork can affect its suitability and total cost. Discuss those details before choosing by price.
The programme depends on clearance, preparation, drainage, area, material availability and weather. Ask for an expected duration after assessment, including when you can park on the finished surface.
An extension needs assessment of parking space, access, levels and drainage, as well as the connection to existing paving. Matching a weathered surface exactly may be difficult, so discuss borders or a revised layout.
Every finish needs some care. Consider joint maintenance and cleaning for paving, cleaning for resin, loose-stone upkeep for gravel and the condition of edges and drainage for all surfaces. Choose according to the product and use rather than a maintenance-free promise.
