Kent ragstone gabion benches
Wire mesh gabions contain Kent ragstone and support timber seating tops. The exposed stone remains visible through the mesh around the bench bases.
GARDEN PROJECT · FOLKESTONE, KENT
An entrance scheme combining mesh gabion benches filled with Kent ragstone, resin-bonded surfacing, shingle and a boat feature.

THE PROJECT
This project at Folkestone Academy brings together seating, pathways and a boat feature in the main entrance area. Mesh gabions filled with Kent ragstone form the bench bases, with timber tops providing the seating surface. The arrangement includes a long bench along the edge and shorter benches extending into the seating area.
Resin-bonded surfacing and shingle define the different parts of the scheme. Curved paths run beside the academy building, while the boat sits within the shingle as a distinct feature. The combination of stone, timber and contrasting aggregate finishes gives each part of the entrance a clear place in the layout.

Resin-bonded surfaces run through the entrance scheme and around the benches, contrasting with the adjoining loose shingle.
Shingle fills the spaces alongside the paths and around the boat feature. Larger stones add another visible texture beside the building.
A boat forms a focal feature within the shingle area, bringing a distinctive element to the academy entrance.
