DECKING MATERIALS
Both can create a useful seating area, connect different garden levels or make better use of an awkward space. The best choice depends on the appearance you want and the upkeep you prefer.
NATURAL MATERIAL
Timber brings natural grain and a warm finish to the garden. Boards can be selected and laid to suit the shape of a terrace, steps or raised area, with edging and balustrades considered as part of the design.
It can be a good fit for a traditional garden or where natural materials sit alongside planting. Timber needs periodic cleaning and may need treatment or finishing to manage weathering. The exact maintenance depends on the timber and product chosen.
ENGINEERED MATERIAL
Composite boards offer a more consistent appearance and a choice of colours and textures. They are often selected when a homeowner wants less routine finishing than timber, while retaining the look of a deck.
Composite is not maintenance-free: it still needs cleaning, and performance varies between products. We can discuss board specification, slip resistance, heat in sunny spots, fixing details and the support structure before recommending a system.
Start with furniture and circulation rather than board colour. Check doors, the route to the lawn and the space needed at steps. A raised deck may suit some level changes, but its height, support and edge protection need proper consideration.
Measure the area and record how far it sits above surrounding ground. Include anything that must remain accessible underneath or alongside it, such as services or drainage.
Timber brings natural grain and can require regular care appropriate to the product. Composite boards have their own appearance, fixing system and maintenance instructions. Neither material removes the need for cleaning or a suitable supporting structure.
Compare samples, wet-use performance and the manufacturer’s specification. Confirm expansion gaps, ventilation and frame requirements for the selected boards instead of assuming all decking products use the same details.
Old boards may hide decayed or unsuitable support. A replacement surface should follow an assessment of posts, beams, joists and connections. Discuss whether the quotation retains any frame and how its condition will be checked.
Ground contact, moisture and access influence the design. Plan the structural work before the visible boards, and agree suitable details at the house and garden edges.
Our completed St Margaret’s Bay project combines composite decking with glass balustrade. The photographs are labelled with that location and show a genuine example to discuss when considering a terrace near Dover.
Your own deck may need different steps or edge protection. Agree their position and supporting construction with the layout. Railings should be specified for their function rather than selected only as decorative accessories.
English permitted-development guidance for qualifying houses includes decking height of no more than 30cm, coverage conditions and location relative to the principal elevation. Those points form part of the complete guidance, with property restrictions and designated land also relevant.
A slope can make height assessment more complicated. Check the actual proposal before construction, especially for a raised terrace, a listed property or a home with restricted development rights.
The frame, boards, site preparation, steps, railings and removal all contribute to installed cost. A straightforward low deck and a raised terrace of equal area are different constructions. Compare complete quotes.
If asking about a 20-by-20 deck, state the units: 20 feet by 20 feet is about 37m²; 20 metres by 20 metres is 400m². Accurate dimensions avoid an entirely different quotation scope.
Discuss patio installers in Dover, garden fencing in Dover, turfing and new lawns in Dover. Agree levels, access and the order of work together where the project includes several improvements.
Planning Portal: decking gives the full conditions, including height, coverage, location and property restrictions.
It is one condition in English permitted-development guidance. Coverage, position and property restrictions also need checking.
Material, support, height, access and features determine the total. Compare a complete site-specific quotation.
Describe the boards, frame, height, steps and railings needed. Area alone does not determine the installed price.
First confirm feet or metres. These dimensions describe very different areas, then construction details determine the cost.
Discuss both options with us, including product-specific support, fixings and maintenance.
Only where the retained structure is suitable after assessment.

This completed St Margaret’s Bay project illustrates the work shown in the photographs. We can discuss the requirements of your own Dover property.
View this project →Request details for the supporting structure as well as the visible board. Product-specific requirements can include fixing methods, gaps and ventilation. A quotation that names a board but leaves the retained frame unassessed does not define the complete installation.
Agree the location of steps, fascia and any railing with the layout. Discuss access to services or drainage and the ongoing inspection of concealed support. Confirm the terms of any product and workmanship warranties separately; one advertised period should not be assumed to cover every component or circumstance.
Use the same agreed scope when comparing proposals. Confirm the materials and work below the visible finish, together with any retained construction. Ask how exclusions or provisional work will be handled and keep the written specification with the quotation.
Photographs, dimensions and access details help define the work. They can start the discussion, with a visit or further assessment where needed. A quoted total is useful when it is clear what the finished result includes.
Agree the programme after the scope and materials are confirmed. Include delivery arrangements, protection of retained features and any periods when the area cannot be used. At handover, confirm how the completed work should be used and cared for, and retain the relevant product details.
