Broken panels and boards
An isolated panel or feather edge board can be replaced where compatible parts are available and the remaining posts, rails and fixings are suitable.
PANELS · POSTS · RAILS · STORM DAMAGE
A broken panel does not always mean replacing the whole boundary. Landscape Gardener of Kent assesses damaged garden fencing in Thanet, from split boards and loose rails to leaning posts, checking the supports and adjoining bays before agreeing the repair.
Send your postcode, photographs and the number of affected sections for a free, no-obligation quote. Include a view along the fence and the access route so we can discuss both the damage and the work needed to reach it.
A panel may have broken because its timber has deteriorated, its fixings have pulled out or its supporting post is moving. Fitting a new panel into an unstable opening can leave the same problem unresolved. We assess which components can stay and which need attention.
An isolated panel or feather edge board can be replaced where compatible parts are available and the remaining posts, rails and fixings are suitable.
The post, connections and ground support need checking. Resetting a sound post and replacing a decayed one involve different work; a repair support is only suitable where the remaining structure can hold it.
Check the material around failed fixings and the connection to each support. A new screw cannot restore badly weakened timber. Include damaged base boards and adjoining bays in the assessment.
A targeted repair is worth considering when most of the run remains sound. Several deteriorated posts, failing rails or recurring damage may make renewing a longer section more practical. Ask which existing components each option retains, rather than comparing two totals for different scopes.
For example, one panel between stable concrete posts may require a compatible replacement section and disposal. If the same opening has a failed timber post, the quote also needs to address the support, its old foundation and connections to adjacent fencing. Three damaged bays with several weak posts warrant a comparison with renewing that part of the run.
New timber will usually look different from weathered sections. Confirm dimensions, style and availability rather than assuming an exact match. For a new height or style, see fencing installation in Thanet.
Keep people and pets away from loose, leaning or partly detached sections. Take photographs from a safe position; do not pull on the fence to demonstrate movement. Show the neighbouring bays even if only one panel has fallen.
Tell us whether the damage has opened the garden, blocked a path or affected a gate. We can discuss availability after reviewing your enquiry; urgent damage does not mean a same-day visit is guaranteed. If you plan to claim on insurance, check the insurer’s evidence and authorisation requirements before arranging repairs.
Where failures recur, discuss the fence height, exposure and support arrangement as part of the assessment. Replacing the same visible component repeatedly may leave the underlying weakness in place.
There is no single price that describes a panel swap, post replacement and renewal of several bays. For your Thanet repair, the useful figure is a written total for the assessed work. Broad directory averages for fencing installation or replacement should not be treated as the price of a small repair.
Ask for exclusions and provisional work to be identified. Concealed decay or old concrete may affect the final scope after inspection. We do not publish a fixed repair tariff because these jobs can involve substantially different work.
Compare quotations for the same repair specification. A daily rate, hourly rate or retail panel price can omit materials, waste handling, post extraction or reinstatement. Ask what the total covers and whether there is a minimum charge for a small job.
A useful quote states the sections being changed, the parts being retained, the replacement materials, disposal arrangements and any conditional work. Ask about the proposed programme and the contractor’s insurance and workmanship terms before commissioning. Do not assume another company’s advertised guarantee, VAT status or emergency availability applies to your quote.
Show the route from the delivery point to the fence at your Thanet property. A rear boundary reached through a narrow side gate needs a different handling plan from a fence alongside an accessible drive. Include steps, corners and finished lawns or paving that need protection. Confirm which side can be reached and agree any access through a neighbour’s garden before scheduling.
For a fence beside a patio or retaining wall, photograph the junction and changes in ground level. Note any gate that needs to remain usable and whether pets must stay contained while a section is removed.
We cover enquiries in Margate, Broadstairs, Ramsgate, Birchington, Westgate-on-Sea and Minster. Include your town and postcode and say whether damage followed a storm or developed gradually. Where the fence is exposed, photograph the whole run so the height, supports and adjoining sections can be considered together.
Not simply because you would prefer a new fence. Establish ownership and check the property documents for any maintenance obligation. A safe fence with no applicable repair requirement is different from a dangerous structure. Do not remove, repair or alter your neighbour’s fence without agreement.
Discuss the damage, responsibility and any contribution before commissioning work. If the fence appears dangerous, raise the safety concern with the owner; unresolved dangerous structures can be reported to the council. Citizens Advice explains fence disagreements and repair responsibilities. Seek advice if the documents or boundary remain disputed.
Ask for permission and agree access before arranging work. Owning the fence does not by itself give you permission to enter the neighbouring garden. Explain which side needs to be reached, the expected work and how planting, paving and gates will be protected.
Record the agreed date, working area and any restrictions with the neighbour. If access is refused and the repair cannot be done from your land, obtain advice about the available legal process; do not assume you can enter without consent. Include access arrangements in the repair quote and programme.
Planning Portal sets out the usual conditions in England: up to 2 metres from ground level away from a vehicle highway, or 1 metre next to a highway used by vehicles, including its footpath. An existing taller boundary has separate provisions where its height is not increased.
Include gravel boards and trellis in the total height. Listed buildings, neighbouring listed boundaries, planning conditions and restrictions on permitted development can change what is allowed. In a conservation area, taking down a boundary may also need permission. Check the particular property before changing the fence.
Read Planning Portal’s fence height and permission guidance and contact Thanet District Council for property-specific planning questions.
Show the hinges, latch, gate frame, supporting post and ground below the opening. Adjustment or replacement hardware may help when the structure is sound, but rehanging will not correct a decayed frame or moving post.
Explain when the problem started and whether the gate catches on paving, will not latch or has dropped after adjacent fence damage. Agree clearance and swing direction alongside any repair to the boundary.
Agree permission and access before scheduling. Fence ownership alone does not authorise entry into a neighbour’s garden. Confirm the working area, timing and protection of adjoining features. If access is refused, seek advice rather than entering without consent.
Yes, where the opening, supports and replacement section are compatible and suitable. We check the neighbouring components too; a new panel will not correct a failed post.
Sometimes. The condition of the post and its ground support determines whether resetting, a suitable repair support or replacement is appropriate. Photographs help the discussion, but concealed damage may require inspection.
We assess storm-damaged panels, rails and supports and discuss repair or replacement. Send overall photographs taken safely and explain any access or containment concern. Availability is confirmed for the particular enquiry.
The scope determines the cost. Panel dimensions, failed supports, access, removal and disposal all affect the fitted total. Request a written quote for the assessed damage rather than relying on a general installation average.
Compare complete quotes for matching work, including materials, labour, waste handling, VAT treatment and conditional items. Ask what an hourly or daily rate excludes.
Check ownership and any legal repair obligation. You cannot require a change just because you prefer it. A dangerous fence raises separate safety concerns; follow the linked Citizens Advice guidance before altering a neighbour’s fence.
The usual England limits are 2 metres away from a vehicle highway or 1 metre beside one, including its footpath, subject to conditions and exceptions. Check total height, existing-height provisions and restrictions before changing the boundary.
Your postcode, approximate fence height, affected bay count and photographs of the whole run, damaged supports and access route. Explain whether the problem followed a storm, developed gradually or affects a gate.
See Thanet fencing options if replacement is being considered, or our Thanet landscaping page for wider garden work. Identify retained sections and agree how the repair meets existing paving, planting and gates before starting.
